The Maid by Nita Prose

When Nana is found dead at midnight and someone begins reading a poem naming the order in which the rest of the family will die next, it becomes clear the killer is one of them. Alice Feeney’s novel became a New York Times bestseller and a Goodreads Choice Award nominee in 2022. The setup is pure Agatha Christie — island, family secrets, everyone’s a suspect — and the poem countdown makes it physically impossible to stop reading.

The dual timeline keeps the pace relentless, and the character work is strong enough that you care about both women equally before the tension kicks in.

The relationship between Hannah and her stepdaughter Bailey is what grounds it. This reads as much like a family drama as a thriller, which makes the suspense feel earned rather than jarring.

In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware
In a Dark, Dark Wood (Gallery Books, August 2015) opens with crime writer Nora waking in a hospital with no memory of what happened, then pulls back to the hen party weekend in a remote English forest where it all went wrong. Ruth Ware’s debut was an NPR Best Book of the Year and a New York Times bestseller. The short chapters and propulsive pacing do the work. You don’t need any experience with thriller books to feel the tension build. The fear is atmospheric, not graphic.

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn
The Woman in the Window (William Morrow, January 2018) follows Anna Fox, an agoraphobic psychologist who watches her New York neighborhood from inside her home. She witnesses what she believes is a crime. No one believes her. A.J. Finn’s novel became a number one New York Times bestseller and sold in 38 countries. The unreliable narrator device here is gentler than most: the doubt comes from other characters, not from Anna herself, which makes it a comfortable first introduction to the technique.

Alex Michaelides’s debut became the bestselling first novel in the world in 2019 and won the Goodreads Choice Award for Mystery & Thriller that year. The setup is stated on page one and never wavers. The twist is among the most discussed in recent thriller history. I’d save this one for when you’ve built up some stamina.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
Gone Girl (Crown Publishing, June 2012) alternates between Nick Dunne (whose wife Amy disappears on their fifth wedding anniversary, making him the prime suspect) and Amy’s past diary entries. Both narrators lie to you the entire time. Gillian Flynn’s novel sold more than 20 million copies worldwide and won the Goodreads Choice Award in 2012. This is the most psychologically intense entry on this list for beginners, and I’ve saved it for last deliberately. It will change how you read every thriller that comes after.
